GuideLinEs For PRACTICE

DANCE FLOOR ETIQUETTE

Stay in the Practice :

Pace yourself. Listen to what is and is not right for your body.

Stay In the room  as consistently as is possible for you. Casually coming and going from our meditation space at one’s leisure is disruptive and discouraged.

Stay in the meditation. The discipline we practice is to stay curious, stay present, and stay moving with everything that arises.  Everything has a motion. Everything is a dance. If you need to rest, slow down, or move on the ground, stay with the meditation. “Watching” from the sidelines is uncomfortable for those still in their meditation.

Keep clear boundaries:

Stay aware of yourself and how your dance or behavior may be affecting everyone or anyone.

Practice Yes and No. NO looks like: someone avoiding eye contact, turning their back towards you, moving away, or bowing out. Let them go! YES looks like: someone turning towards you, making eye contact, positively responding to or mirroring your movement. Go for it!

End any partner dance at any time by bowing-out or clearly moving away.

DANCE FLOOR REQUIREMENTS:

Keep it non-verbal  Conversations stay off the dance floor

Bare feet or dance shoes only  Take socks off ( they are too slippery)

Keep shirts on

No gum

No cell phones or recording devices

How ARE 5Rhythms and ECsTATIC DANCE DIFFERENT?

What is Ecstatic Dance?

Ecstatic Dance broadly defines any style of freeform, non-structured alcohol & drug free dance event that invites participants to move and express themselves in any way they wish. Ecstatic Dance Facilitators and DJs’ play a variety of music, sometimes crafted as a musical journey. While an intention or theme might be presented, facilitators do not guide dancers verbally, and the group does not follow a common physical discipline. Ecstatic Dance draws on a variety of influences and traditions, was not created or developed by anyone in particular and no one in particular has rights to it. Anyone who wishes to can start an ecstatic dance group at any time. Some organized Ecstatic Dance forums provide a musical training for their DJ’s, some do not. The common goal of Ecstatic Dance is to provide an open, musically supported space for free movement, connection and community.

What is the 5Rhythms™?

The 5Rhythms™ defines an original and creative body of work developed by artist, theater director and author Gabrielle Roth. The 5Rhythms™ is a movement method and cosmology articulated by a system of movement maps, archetypes, gateways and levels of practice.

5Rhythms™ classes and workshops use awareness practices, movement exercises, ritual theater, solo, partner and group work to catalyze untried movement, creativity and connection among participants.  The first level of practice (Waves) focuses on fully embodying each of the 5 Rhythms: Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness™. Advanced 5Rhythms™ practice explores how these rhythms move through the emotional body (Heartbeat), the human life span (Cycles), the Ego & Soul (Mirrors) and the Spirit (Silver Desert).

5Rhythms™ classes and workshops can only be offered by certified teachers. A period of pre-requisite study in all the 5Rhythms™ maps and an application based yearlong teacher-training program must be completed to gain certification. Accreditation is maintained through the 5Rhythms™ Teachers Association and on-going continuing education requirements.

5Rhythms™ “Sweats” can only be offered by certified 5Rhythms™ Sweat Spaceholders. For more information on 5Rhythms™ practice and teaching path look HERE.

Similarities and Differences:

Sweat Your Prayers® is one specific type of 5Rhythms™ class, which is designed to have less focused instruction than regular 5Rhythms™ classes and workshops. It is usually structured by a warm up, and a lightly guided 5Rhythm™ musical Wave.

Some Ecstatic Dance forums have found inspiration or musical influence from the Sweat Your Prayers® style of 5Rhythms™ class.

Besides this, there is no formal connection or association between 5Rhythms™ and Ecstatic Dance.
